Till July, mobile phones generated average 47.7% sales which amount to $280.4 billion. It is a 10.2% increase in spending from last year. There were 40% sales reported through mobiles phones in 2020 which increased steadily over the years. In 2023, the percentage reached 51% and is expected to grow more.
Shopify, an ecommerce platform, reported that their mobile commerce is rising quickly as many users are using mobile more than their desktops to purchase different things. Many brands are also relying on mobile apps and social media to drive their sales. Salesforce reported that mobile wallets have also made the user shopping experience easy and quick, with 46% YoY sales.
Adobe also reported that many promotional events and sales have made mobile commerce popular among users. During sale events, there were 51% average sales made through mobile phones instead of desktops. 68.2% of the grocery shopping was done through mobile in July 2024. Most of the grocery shopping is done through mobile since 2021. Cosmetics and apparel are also favorite things of users to shop on mobile. 77% of cosmetic shopping and 60.8% of apparel shopping was done through mobile in July 2024.
Adobe also reports that many home appliances and electronics which are costly are not done on mobiles. In July 2024, 33.3% of home appliances and 21.3% of electronics were purchased through mobile. Users also use mobile phones for smaller purchases. Many customers have a smaller cart or basket when they shop online on mobiles but they tend to add many products in their carts when they shop on desktop.
Many big retailers are also shifting to mobile shopping with 52.8% of their share going on mobile shopping. Target and Walmart have also tried to shift as many things as possible to mobile so the customers can shop easily from them. Some smaller retailers have an average share of 43% for mobile shopping and there is a lot of room for their growth on mobiles.
