The US Federal Trade Commission has ordered five major generative AI developers to provide information on recent investments and partnerships as part of its fair competition scrutiny.
The five firms are OpenAI, which developed the chatbot ChatGPT, Microsoft, Google owner Alphabet, Amazon and Anthropic, a startup created by former employees of OpenAI.
OpenAI has been teaming up with Microsoft. Google and Amazon have invested in Anthropic.
The information being sought by the FTC includes agreements and the strategic reasons for a specific investment or partnership, decisions around new product releases and the topic of regular meetings.
The FTC says the companies will have 45 days to respond after receiving the orders.
FTC Chair Lina Khan said in a statement, “Our study will shed light on whether investments and partnerships pursued by dominant companies risk distorting innovation and undermining fair competition.”
