New research from Informatica reveals more data leaders plan to capitalise on generative AI, but data quality remains the key obstacle to adoption


GUEST RESEARCH: Informatica, an enterprise cloud data management leader, released the findings of its annual survey of global data leaders – CDO Insights 2024: Charting a Course to AI Readiness.

The report, which canvassed 600 enterprise chief data officers and other data decision makers across the US, Europe and Asia Pacific, provides insights into generative AI readiness, key technical, and organisational roadblocks to implementation and top data and data management priorities and strategies for 2024.

In the seven countries surveyed across Asia Pacific, including Australia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, and Singapore, data leaders in the region are readily looking to adopt generative AI into their business practices in the next 24 months, they have also placed AI governance/ethics to be the most important priority in planning their data strategies in 2024.

“Unsurprisingly, generative AI implementation and the data strategies needed to do so successfully continue to dominate bandwidth for most data leaders, regardless of region or vertical,” said Informatica chief product officer Jitesh Ghai. “While there remains a myriad of technical and organisational hurdles that these leaders must navigate, it’s clear investments in holistic, highly integrated data management capabilities are the key to unlock the vast potential of GenAI and empower enterprises to take full control of their ever-expanding data estates.”




APAC key findings
Generative AI adoption is already well underway

  • While Korea (64%) and India (75%) have already incorporated generative AI in their business practice, Singapore (63%) and Australia (53%) are next to expect generative AI rollout in their organisation in coming one to 24 months
    Data quality continues to be a major hurdle to generative AI adoption
    Nearly all APAC respondents have encountered roadblocks when adopting generative AI, citing AI ethics (42%) and data privacy & protection (42%) as their main challenges
    Interestingly, 53% of Australian respondents said avoiding bias as their biggest concern, highlighting the negative impact that biased data and algorithms baked in AI models can bring. This is followed by data privacy & protection (42%) and AI governance (36%)

Data fragmentation and complexity persists and is expected to worsen in 2024

  • 56% APAC data leaders are struggling to balance 1,000-plus data sources in their organisation
  • 78% of APAC data leaders expects the number of data sources will increase in 2024
  • 60% of APAC leaders say they’ll need five or more data management tools to support their priorities and manage their data estates, an increase from 2023 (55%)

Data readiness is top of mind when it comes to AI and data strategy ROI

  • 45% of APAC data leaders reported that improving readiness of data for AI and analytics is the most common metric to measure data strategy effectiveness
    In Australia, while data readiness, improvements in data delivery timelines and data literacy across their organisations – all sitting at 43% equally, 45% of data leaders view the inability to justify ROI and lack of control over budget for their data management strategies as a major hurdle APAC data leaders also placed the highest emphasis (67%) on enabling more self-service and data democratisation across their organisation when using generative AI to address their data management needs

Investment in generative AI is driving mutual investment in data management

  • APAC data leaders cited the ability to deliver reliable and consistent data fit for generative AI (40%) and improving data governance over data and processes (40%) as the top data strategy priorities in 2024
    Data privacy and protection (45%), data quality and observability (42%), and data integration and engineering (40%) remain top data management capabilities to invest in to support these priorities

    These findings emphasise the intrinsic connection between generative AI adoption and sound data management strategies, and the increased priority data leaders around the world have placed on both in the year ahead.

While this new era of AI promises plenty of potential, it guarantees increased complexity for enterprises and data leaders, from the management of disparate and evolving data ecosystems to the countless data and organisational roadblocks to implementation. As the report states: “With AI and data management, data leaders can recognise that it is not one driving the other, but rather that the two go hand in hand – and making the most of both means transformative change for these technologies, leaders’ strategies, and the future of their organisations.”
