Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Open AI CEO Sam Altman seem to be working towards a common goal –– building artificial general intelligence. Zuckerberg on Friday revealed his brand new goal in the field of AI. He says he wants to bring together two of his long term goals in AI together –– building artificial general intelligence, open sourcing it responsibly, and making it widely available so everyone can benefit from it.

Around this time last year, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed the company’s “mission” “to ensure that artificial general intelligence—AI systems that are generally smarter than humans—benefits all of humanity.”

Zuckerberg and Altman’s announcement almost echo each other. They have both spoken about using artificial general intelligence to “empower humanity”, making the services based on the tech “more widely available”, and building the services “responsibly”.

Zuckerberg revealed this plan in a video he shared on his channel on Instagram and Whatsapp. Currently, he lacks a specific timeline for achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) or a precise definition of it.

The competition for AI talent is currently at its most intense, as every company in the field is competing for a limited number of researchers and engineers.

“It’s become clear that the next generation of services requires building full general intelligence, building the best AI assistants, AIs for creators, businesses and more. That needs advances in every area of AI, from reasoning to planning to coding to memory and other cognitive abilities. This technology is so important and the opportunities are so great that we should open source and make it as widely available as we responsibly can. So everyone can benefit,” Zuckerberg says in the video.

Zuckerberg also said that by the end of 2024, Meta;s goal is to have approximately 350,000 units of NVIDIA H100s, or roughly 600,000 H100-equivalent computing power when factoring in other GPUs. Presently, the company is engaged in training the llama 3 model.

“…we’ve got an exciting roadmap of future models and we are going to keep training them responsibly and safely too,” he added.

With this goal, Zuckerberg also sees AI and Metaverse coming together eventually. “I think a lot of us are going to talk to AI frequently throughout the day. And I think a lot of us are going to do that using glasses. Because glasses are the ideal form factor for letting an AI see what you see and hear what you hear. So it’s always available to help out.
