Experts challenge assumptions: The rise of artificial general intelligence remains uncertain – Fasi Uddin Usmani

Experts from Radboud University challenge the notion that artificial general intelligence (AGI) will inevitably surpass human cognition, arguing that current claims by tech giants like OpenAI and Google DeepMind are exaggerated. Lead author Iris van Rooij asserts that developing AGI with human-level thinking is impossible, emphasizing that theory alone cannot bridge the gap to reality.

The researchers highlight the complexities of replicating human cognition in AI, stressing the need for critical AI literacy. They caution that society often overestimates AI capabilities while underestimating human cognition, warning against uncritical acceptance of tech companies’ promises. Understanding these limitations is vital for informed public discourse on AI.
