Expert panel to help set generative AI rules in Japan

Japanese technology experts have formed a panel to recommend rules for artificial intelligence systems that generate content such as text and images.

Four universities and businesses including the Japanese units of Microsoft and Amazon are among the 33 entities participating in the effort.

The group will help government authorities set regulations for generative AI systems.

It also plans to develop education programs, train engineers and share information on using AI systems.

Keio University Professor Miyata Hiroaki is heading the group. He told reporters on Wednesday, “Generative AIs will change everything in human activities, including learning, working and living. We will think about what is needed and what we can do for the future with this technology.”

Separately, about 30 Japanese companies are jointly working to establish a new certification system to promote the safety and security of generative AI technology.
